Compassion, or Public Relations?

On my assignment today, we had to stand outside in the blistering heat for about an hour.
I was covering an announcement from Citgo that they're supplying energy-efficient light bulbs to 7,000 Houston households. They talked about the extreme heat and how important it is for low-income residents to stay cool and still save money on their energy bills. As the speakers droned on, they appeared to be oblivious to our misery. I don't think they even noticed when an older woman got sick from the heat and was put in a car and taken to the hospital.

Were they standing in the shade with fans? Mayor White talked about that when he came to a ground breaking ceremony at my office that often times at speeches and rallies that the candidate or speaker is well taken care of in the shade while supporters and attendees are left out in the elements.

Also what does light bulbs have to do with staying cool... is their energy savings from the new lights going to enable them to run their a/c longer? Seems like a stretch to me...

I had the same thought, Greg. Light bulbs help cool people off?

Hmmm...as I understand it, the light bulbs are energy efficient which equals money saved. So, these people are able to use their air conditioning without fear that the bill will be ginormous. Regular light bulbs + air conditioning = $$$$ while energy efficient light bulbs + air conditioning = less energy usage, and therefore bills won't skyrocket during this hottest time of the year.

However, I do see the irony in the fact that they chose to make this announcement OUTSIDE. Smart move, PR dept.

ADW, given that the topic was light bulbs, I would have gone with "bright idea" instead of "smart move" :-)
