Shorthand

Yesterday it was pointed out to me that most people (except James) don't know what things like "wx" mean. I use several abbreviations and acronyms as part of my radio "lingo" and sometimes they find their way into my regular conversation. So I thought I'd write up a list of the most common shorthand words in my business and see if they make sense to anyone. I'll put them in context.

Record severe wx update.

According to Webster's, an acronym is "a word formed from the intial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term."
An abbreviation is "a shortened form of a word or phrase used for brevity, especially in writing."

Not the same thing. :}

I know "wx" and "SCOTUS", but you've lost me on the rest . . . and it's not like I don't live in a world of acronyms! :)

Anonymous,
I use WTH in my journalism jargon all the time. I can't believe I forgot that one! I'll up my contribution to WTH Ministries as compensation for my oversight.
