It's Us or Them

Saw another roach last night. I was sitting on the loveseat and one crawled out from underneath and ran right past my feet. Shudder. Needless to say, I jumped off the couch and tried to get the raid. Unfortunately, the roach was blocking my path to the kitchen...I couldn't get to the spray. I ran upstairs to see if we had some up there...nope. Went back downstairs and he was gone. Do you realize how upsetting this is to someone who has an irrational fear of roaches? I knew he was in the house somewhere, but had no idea where he was or if he would try to make another appearance. I stood in the middle of the room, trying not to cry. Then I left and went to my friend Julie's house. She had invited me over for a dinner and I decided it would be better to show up at her place early then try to stay in my house with a roach on the loose. I'm currently looking for a new home...I will not co-habitate with a cockroach.

Lauie, don't you see it? The roach was doing everything he/she/it could to show love! What a better place to extend a peace treaty than the loveseat? Come on, show a little compassion....

Have you considered hiring an exterminator?

If you would like to forego the cost of an exterminator, you can probably take care of your roach problem yourself (quite safely, I might add).

Just go to your local hardware store/big-box home store/etc. and buy whatever brand roach powder you can get that has boric acid as its active ingredient. Then dust wherever your water pipes and gas lines enter your house (lightly) as well as your baseboards (don't forget to get behind the fridge, especially if you have an ice maker). Do the same thing in the bathrooms. After a week or so, you'll start to see far fewer roaches in the house.

Boric acid is pretty safe to deal with (though I wouldn't pour it out all over where you cook your food), but it's deadly to roaches, in a slow way, so they take it back to their nests with them and give it to their friends.

If you're not happy with the results, you can still call the exterminator, but if the boric acid (borax) works for you, it's a whole lot cheaper.

Laurie - I think MTV made a movie on this once... Joe's Apartment...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116707/

Maybe you guys could suggest a sequel! :)

The fact that Mike just referred to roaches and "nests" makes me want to hurl.

Dustin, roaches are not capable of love. They are evil personified and every Christian should make it part of their personal mission to eradicate them from the face of the earth.

Mike, I have heard of boric acid before, but forgot about it. I may try that. I'll probably call an exterminator...but am not sure how much that costs, so boric acid may be just the solution. Thanks for the idea!

Jessica,
That movie was one of the worst horror movies ever made. There should be laws against filming those kinds of atrocities.

When the roach was blocking your kitchen, did it occur to you that you can jump over it very quickly? Please don't burn your place down in hopes you'll get the beast.
